About Tamang Community
Preserving our rich heritage while embracing modernity
Our Proud Heritage
The Tamang are one of Nepal's largest indigenous communities, with a distinct culture, language, and traditions that date back centuries. Our name "Tamang" means "horse traders" in Tibetan, reflecting our historical role in trans-Himalayan trade.
Primarily residing in the hills surrounding the Kathmandu Valley and across central and eastern Nepal, we maintain our unique identity while contributing to Nepal's multicultural tapestry.
Our community is known for its rich oral traditions, vibrant festivals like Lhosar, unique musical instruments like the damphu, and exquisite craftsmanship in wood and metal work.
Music & Dance
Tamang selo music and dance are integral to our cultural expression, performed during festivals and celebrations.
Traditional Houses
Our distinctive stone and wood houses with carved windows reflect our architectural heritage.
Cuisine
Unique dishes like kinema (fermented soybeans), gundruk, and traditional alcoholic beverages.
Spirituality
We practice a blend of Tibetan Buddhism with indigenous Bon and shamanic traditions.
